In the process towards decarbonisation, green hydrogen continues to gain strength as a real clean fuel alternative for industries and heavy transport. With the aim of raising public awareness of the important role of this new energy vector in addressing the climate emergency, ScottishPower has launched the “Scottish School’s Hydrogen Challenge”.

This school challenge, in collaboration with Arcola Energy and ITM Power, is aimed at secondary school students who, in teams of three students, will try to build the most efficient hydrogen vehicle. More than 7,000 schoolchildren are expected to take part in the challenge.

The vehicles will compete in a time trial. The three best teams from each region will participate in the grand final in Glasgow during COP26. The vehicle that manages to drive the longest distance will win a Lego Inventor Robot.

“This challenge will help raise awareness among Scottish students about how green hydrogen can help decarbonise our daily lives,” explained Barry Carruthers, ScottishPower’s hydrogen director. The company is a pioneer in the development of this technology in Scotland: “We are currently working on the development of several projects in this field, including the largest green hydrogen facility in Scotland. We still have a lot of work to do to make society aware that this zero-emission fuel is crucial to achieving climate neutrality goals,” said Carruthers.
